Photo Credit: the holiday season, we all love getting together with family and friends, exchanging gifts and enjoy each other's company. However, this time of year is about more than just presents and events. The Christmas season is one of the most important times for charities because most people are in the giving spirit.

From the Salvation Army bell ringers to the many charity events, there are a number of ways to support both local and national charities. One of the charities in the Fort Walton Beach area needing your help is Shelter House.

Shelter House serves the Okaloosa area and Walton counties by helping with those suffering from sexual and domestic violence. This very important charity is accepting donations through their annual holiday food drive.

After the food has been collected, the agency packages it up into holiday meal baskets for the survivors of sexual and domestic violence and their families. They take into account how many people are in each home to make sure there's enough for everybody.

The goal of this food drive is to help spread a little holiday joy to those suffering through a painful time. Healing from violence isn't an easy process and these people need the love of the community. One way to show love to these victims of abuse is through the food drive.

Meals will be provided for both Thanksgiving and Christmas and donations from the community are needed to help. The Shelter House will accept any non-perishable food items at any time and will accept perishable items, such as bread, fruit, turkeys, hams and vegetables on Monday, November 25th and Wednesday, December 18th.

Donations can be delivered to the Shelter House at the 102 Buck Drive location in Fort Walton Beach. Drop off any donation you would like to make from 8am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. Some of the things needed include:

  • Turkeys
  • Hams
  • Stuffing Mix
  • Gravy
  • Soups
  • Cranberry Sauce
  • Fresh Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Pie Crusts
  • Condensed Milk
  • Laundry Baskets

Gift cards are also welcome and volunteers are also needed to help assemble the baskets.
