The Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation (DCWAF) held its 9th annual auction and this year they managed to raise a record breaking total of just over $2 million. This is a 57% increase from last year’s results of $1.3 million, with the funds being raised for children in need and allocated to 12 different children’s charities in Northwest Florida.
The Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation’s mission is to connect wine enthusiasts in order to raise money to benefit children in need. It was founded in 2005 and since its inauguration it has donated over $6 million to Northwest Florida charities through hosting world class wine and culinary events. It has impacted the lives of over 50,000 youth and, according to Wine Spectator Magazine, it is recognized as one of the nation’s ‘Top 10 Charity Wine Auctions in the US.’
The charity is a local favorite, bringing in the elite and philanthropic wine enthusiasts. It is attended by the top chefs and the best vintners, who offer their products and other prizes in both live and silent auction settings.
This year the auction was blessed, and fortunate to welcome the support of celebrity Chef Emeril Lagasse and his wife, Alden Lagasse, who not only won the opening lot, but also offered up a prize package that included 10 passes to the Emeril Lagasse Foundation’s 10th Annual Carnivale du Vin in New Orleans, lodging at the Ritz-Carlton New Orleans, and five magnums of Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino signed by vintner Cristina Mariani-May.
The 2014 charity auction was more than a year in the making and exceeded the expectations of the organizers. “We are extremely grateful for the tremendous support we once again received from vintners, chefs, and the local community,” said John Russell, president of DCWAF.
The auction comprised of more than 150 unique live and silent offerings, ranging from one-of-a-kind trips to fabulous art to incomparable collections of rare wines. "I was honored to be part of this year's festivities in support of the DCWAF charities who help transform the lives of so many children in need," stated this year's honorary vintner, Paul Hobbs from Paul Hobbs Wines.
During the wine auction weekend, 13 Patron Dinners were held in notable restaurants and private homes in the area. These dinners pair celebrity chefs with participating vintners to create a memorable dining experience for every attendee. The event was sold out with 600 wine enthusiasts attending, making it the most successful Destin Charity Wine Auction on record. The highest bid of the day was $50,000 for an African safari.
Next year’s charity wine auction is already set for April 24-26, 2015, so save the date. Other upcoming events in the Destin area include the Red, White, & Blue Celebration (Thursday, May 29, 2014), North Light Marina Signature Fishing Tournament (Saturday, June 7, 2014), and the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic (June 18 - 22, 2014.
