Destin itself was originally a fishing village founded by Captain Leonard Destin but since then it has gradually grown from a humble village to the metropolitan city it is today. Thanks to its tropical location Destin can offer you some of the most amazing beaches you've ever seen, thanks also to the ancient waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The beaches are filled with white powder sand, with the warm azure waters of the Gulf of Mexico lapping against them, making Destin a more than idyllic place to either visit or actually set up home in.

The reason why the sand on the beaches of Destin is so fine is that it's actually made from ground quartz which makes it look like the beaches are covered in powdered sugar instead of actual sand. It's difficult to explain how fine the sand on these beaches is but once you set foot on it you'll understand almost instantly.

In terms of getting to the beaches in the area there are 9 separate access points from the city to the public beaches, making getting to the beach an easy affair. The lifeguards in the area do operate a flag system so please do pay attention to it – the red and purple flags especially. Fortunately you'll find that Destin, like so many other Gulf cities, enjoys calm surf and pleasant swimming conditions with very little swell to complain of, which means you get to enjoy swimming in the ocean instead of trying to avoid it.

If you enjoy fishing you'll definitely enjoy the annual Destin Fishing Rodeo each October - this has been running for over 60 years now and to complement this fishing rodeo October is also when the Destin Seafood Festival happens.

Fantastic beaches, food and fishing and all with some of the best weather conditions in the world - Destin certainly does have a lot to offer!
